Wedderlie Blackbox J935, owned by Albert & Jennifer DeCogan, Killamuckey, Castlemartyr, Co. Cork is this year’s Aberdeen-Angus recipient of the prestigious RDS Champion of Champions award. Sired by Abberton Mr Bionic G141 and purchased in Stirling, UK some years ago from the Tilson Family, Scotland, Wedderlie Blackbox J935 has compiled a superb run of show ring successes for the DeCogan pair.
Last year alone, this seven year-old senior bull secured a pair of high profile wins, clinching both the Overall Supreme Breed Championship at the AIB National Livestock Show, Tullamore and the Univet All-Ireland Aberdeen-Angus Supreme Championship at the Royal Meath Show. These two major titles were backed up by a further three supreme breed championships (at Dualla, Carbery & Tinahley shows) and five male championships (at Clonakilty, Charleville, Dunmanway, Cork and Barryroe shows) over the past summer as well as several inter-breed beef titles to his credit too.
Wedderlie Blackbox J935 is also a multiple recipient of the Best Stock Bull Award at the annual Munster Aberdeen-Angus Club herds competition and has twice represented the Aberdeen-Angus breed at the season-ending National Ploughing Championships. In addition to his prowess in the show ring, Wedderlie Blackbox J935 boasts a five star ICBF terminal index with a five star rating across a number of key traits including carcass conformation and carcass weight as well as a calving ease figure well below the official breed average. Progeny of Wedderlie Blackbox J935 look set to emulate the achievement of their sire, with sons topping the trade at both the High Health Status sale of bulls at Bandon and the inaugural Irish Aberdeen-Angus Premier Autumn Sale – both held in 2016.
An outstanding example of the Aberdeen-Angus breed, the RDS Champion of Champions award is fitting way to round off a wildly successful 2016 show campaign for Wedderlie Blackbox J935.
