The first of three scheduled sales to be held at Kilkenny took place this week, with over 60 bulls catalogued for the sale. The top price of the day went to Nigel Peavoy, Monnagh, Coolrain, Portlaoise, Co. Laois who sold Coolrain Salam for €4600. This 17 month old bull was sired by the noted AI bull, Friarstown Ideal Pete K202 and was out of a Netherton Mr Brazilian E377 dam.
Young breeder, Nevan McKiernan, Lacken Lower, Ballinagh, Cavan, Co. Cavan took the second highest price of the sale, selling his 21 month old bull, Drumcrow Peach Snaps V048 for €3500. This bull was below the breed average for calving on both cows and heifers and was sired by Drumcrow Joker who has bred very well at Drumcrow and sired many champions and top priced progeny over the years.
Another Drumcrow Joker son, Drumcrow Proud Joker V788 exhibited by Frank McKiernan, Lacken Lower, Ballinagh, Cavan, Co Cavan sold for €3150. This 4 star terminal index bull was out of Drumcrow Red Purty M510 who is a daughter of the AI bull, Luddenmore Fionn G441.
Also trading at €3150 was Brideswell Shane exhibited by Karl Harrison, Athlone, Co. Roscommon whilst Knockmountagh Socrates exhibited by Eamon McKiernan, Monasterboice, Co Louth rounded out the principal prices of the day, selling at €3000.
Overall, the sale produced a 77% clearance (up from 60% from 2020’s March sale) with Aberdeen-Angus bulls selling to an average price of €2450 (up €150 on the same sale last year) with sustained interest throughout the day for quality Aberdeen-Angus bulls of all ages.
